Young Africans have gone shopping in Pretoria's coaching pipeline. The Tanzanian champions have appointed Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach on a two year deal, pulling him away from an 11 year association with Mamelodi Sundowns where he won the 2016 CAF Champions League as part of Pitso Mosimane's staff.
Mngqithi spent last season at Golden Arrows before taking the Yanga job, his first coaching role outside South Africa. He replaces caretaker Abdihamid Moallin, who guided Young Africans to a record extending 31st league title, finishing two points clear of rivals Simba SC.
The appointment means Tanzania's two biggest clubs will both be led by South African coaches next season, with Steve Barker staying on at Simba. Yanga's board has been explicit about why they went for Mngqithi: a coach with genuine CAF Champions League pedigree, brought in to turn domestic dominance into continental results. That is the gap Young Africans have failed to close for years, and it is now Mngqithi's job to close it.
