It’s almost here… the 15th edition of CAF’s U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Morocco. The continental showpiece runs from Sunday, March 30 2025, to Saturday, April 19, 2025. The U17 AFCON 2025 features 12 teams from across Africa, divided into three groups of four. The qualification process involves regional preliminary rounds, followed by a final qualifying tournament.
As has always been the case, the fast-approaching AFCON tournament will serve as a qualification pathway to the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup, with the top 10 African teams earning a spot in the newly expanded global showpiece set to take place in Qatar later this year.
The tournament, which, among other benefits, promotes unity across the continent, will run for about three weeks, with matches held every 2-3 days. Each of the teams is expected to play three matches in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group, alongside the two best third-placed teams, then advance to the knockout stage.
The History of CAF U17 AFCON
The Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (U17 AFCON) was first established in 1995, with the tournament becoming a biennial event since then. The competition has played a crucial role in developing young football talent across the continent. Many of Africa's most successful senior players began their careers at this level, including iconic figures like Samuel Eto'o, Didier Drogba, and Yaya Touré.
The U17 CAF AFCON has grown in prestige over the years. It not only provides a platform for youth players to develop their skills but also acts as a crucial stepping stone for their professional careers. Players who perform well at the U17 level often attract attention from top clubs, and the tournament’s exposure can fast-track their careers both domestically and internationally.
The qualification process for the U17 CAF AFCON is an exciting part of the competition. Each CAF member association organises its qualifying tournaments, with the best teams progressing to the final competition. The number of spots each region gets is usually based on the strength of football in that region, and it is up to the national teams to battle it out in regional qualifiers for a place in the tournament.
Once the teams are selected, the competition is structured in a round-robin format for the group stage. The top two teams from each group then advance to the knockout rounds, which consist of the semi-finals, final, and third-place playoff. The finalists of the U17 CAF AFCON 2025 will not only compete for continental glory but will also earn a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, marking a significant achievement for any nation.

As one of the most anticipated youth football tournaments on the continent, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations serves as a key platform for showcasing emerging football talent in Africa. It is therefore a veritable glimpse into the future of African football. FIFA’s recent decision at its Bangkok Congress to expand the U17 World Cup to 48 teams, increasing Africa’s representation to 10, had led many to believe that CAF would adjust its qualification process to allow more teams.
However, the governing body has opted to maintain its current format, ensuring that only the best-performing nations from the regional qualifiers will make it to Morocco. The U17 CAF AFCON 2025 is likely to feature a host of rising stars who could go on to make their mark on the international football stage. Players who shine in this tournament often find themselves on the radar of top European clubs and may transition into the senior national teams in the future.
