Kampala, Uganda-The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024 by 100%. Additionally, the overall prize money for the competition has been increased by 45%. WAFCON 2024 kicked off on Saturday in Rabat, with an opening match between the hosts, Morocco and Zambia.
The expanded jackpot guarantees that the winner of WAFCON 2024 will receive $1 million. The runner-up will earn $500,000, while the team in third place will be awarded $350,000, and the fourth place team will receive $300,000. Each team that reaches the quarter-finals will get $200,000. The total prize money for the tournament has increased to $3,475,000, up from $2.4 million in 2022.

The increased prize money is intended to boost the salaries of women football players, coaches and employees. It is part of CAF’s endeavors to improve the quality and standards of women’s football across Africa and elevate it to a world class level.
“CAF is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa. The 100% increase in the winner’s prize and the overall 45% rise in total prize money should help improve salaries for players, coaches and staff. We are excited by the rising quality, viewership and sponsor interest in this tournament,” said CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe.
In comparison, CAF’s European counterparts, Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have set the total available prize money for the Women's EURO 2025 at €41 million ($45 million). This represents a 156% increase in total prize money for the ongoing competition. All teams playing in the WEURO 2025 will receive a fixed participation fee of €1.8 million ($2 million) for qualifying for the final tournament. The maximum prize money available for the tournament winners will be €5.1 million ($5.5 million).

In addition to increasing prize money, CAF has expanded the tournament’s television coverage. The opening match was viewed in over 120 territories, and more than 30 Free-to-Air broadcasters in Africa will ensure WAFCON 2024 is accessible to audiences. WAFCON 2025 is a powerful statement of intent, heralding a new dawn for women’s football in Africa.
